{"id":110,"date":"2018-02-21T17:05:45","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T17:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.halfhousecottage.co.uk\/?page_id=110"},"modified":"2026-01-28T09:56:26","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T09:56:26","slug":"activities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.halfhousecottage.co.uk\/?page_id=110","title":{"rendered":"Activities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is there to do?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>You will love to stay beside St Mary&#8217;s Loch at Cappercleuch if you like gorgeous scenery,&nbsp;peaceful walks, spotting wildlife, watching the dark night sky, fishing, kayaking, cycling, driving or motorcycling on relatively quiet roads&#8230; or just reading your book!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You won&#8217;t find street lights, club venues, jet-skis or fast food outlets. Those things may be great in their place but that place probably isn&#8217;t St Mary&#8217;s Loch!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, if all this countryside gets too much, it&#8217;s less than an hours drive to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/maps\/place\/Straiton+Park+%26+Ride\/@55.8862536,-3.1688723,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x4887bf571cc0b5ff:0x4b66aebb5b615f0!8m2!3d55.8862536!4d-3.1666837?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;park and ride&#8221;<\/a> on the outskirts of Edinburgh if you want to spend some time in the capital. Drive all the way into the city by all means but be prepared for some pricey parking! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotrail.co.uk\/scotland-by-rail\/great-scenic-rail-journeys\/borders-railway-edinburgh-tweedbank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Borders Railway<\/a> is another alternative and attractive way to get into the Centre of Edinburgh (train from Galashiels or Tweedbank).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">At or near St Mary&#8217;s Loch<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Walking:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/www.halfhousecottage.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/P1010716x-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.halfhousecottage.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/P1010716x-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.halfhousecottage.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/P1010716x-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.halfhousecottage.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/P1010716x.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Walks include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/borders\/st-marys-loch.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ring of the Loch circular<\/a> which incorporates a short section of the Southern Upland Way along the south shore. &nbsp;This walk effectively starts at your front gate. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nts.org.uk\/visit\/places\/grey-mares-tail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Grey Mare&#8217;s tail&#8221;<\/a> is a scenic waterfall that&#8217;s 5 miles along the road where you can walk up to the tiny <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/galloway\/grey-mares-tail.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Loch Skeen<\/a>,&nbsp;surrounded by hills that are reminiscent of Highland mountains. You can be completely free-form if you want as you can walk pretty much anywhere in the hills around here without restriction. Get properly togged up, make sure you have the relevant Ordnance Survey map (or app) and off you go. Do be aware that the early part of the year is lambing time. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdooraccess-scotland.scot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scottish Outdoor Access Code<\/a> sets out the &#8220;rules&#8221;. Buzzards are so common everywhere these days that they risk not being seen as special but their soaring flight and their ability to hover almost as well as the Kestrel are still worth watching. Peregrine falcons can be seen over the Grey Mare&#8217;s Tail and wild goats are in the same area. If you see an <em>enormous<\/em> crow it will likely be a raven. &nbsp;We have a red squirrel that visits the garden from time to time and there are usually pheasants there too. A tawny owl sometimes perches on the old telegraph pole in front of the house.&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Otters have been seen around the loch where there are also many different types of ducks, grebes and divers. Whooper swans migrate to the loch in winter (they come all the way from Iceland). Looking up to the hill behind the cottage a red fox was seen, in full flight with his tail streaming out behind him (not welcomed by the farmers but a fine sight)! The roe deer graze the scrub on the same hill and are reputed to swim in the loch.<br>Hares come down from the hill and one sometimes does a circuit of the village hall! We once spotted a white mountain hare on Cappercleuch Law behind the house. We have seen lizards and slow worms, both common in the area. We can give you use of a free fishing permit. The club also rents out boats. Huge pike are regularly caught but there are also brown trout, perch and eels. Sometimes salmon will come into the loch, though they are not a regular catch. If you want river fishing then the Tweed is, of course, world famous for salmon &#8211; nearest point is just 20 minutes drive away. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fishpal.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FishPal<\/a> site gives useful information about the Tweed but their page relating to St Mary&#8217;s Loch was way out of date last time we looked. Contact should be made directly with the Lochkeeper before fishing: 07412659569 &#8211; Gael<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Megget reservoir is just a few minutes drive from Cappercleuch. Reputedly there&#8217;s some brown trout in there so it might be worth casting a fly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sailing\/Boating\/Kayaking\/Canoeing:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stmlsc.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">St Mary&#8217;s Loch Sailing Club<\/a> would be the first point of contact if you want to find out about sailing on the loch. We can provide locked garage space to keep things safe if you are bringing your own. However, there are also trails for all abilities. If you don&#8217;t bring your own bikes they can be hired from <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tweedvalleybikehire.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alpine Bikes<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">. You can even take a course at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ridelines.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ridelines<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> to improve your skills, kids level right up to total bonkers adult level! Those are all within 30 mins travel time. Extend the travel just a little and there are too many courses to list here!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Abbeys and Historic Houses:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Where do we start! Well, the nearest, oldest and most significant big hoose in the area is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.traquair.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Traquair House<\/a> which is about a 20 min drive. The maze at the back knocks Hampton Court&#8217;s into a cocked hat (in my opinion)! Here&#8217;s a list of significant historic attractions with links to their Websites. Nearest first:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowhillhouse.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bowhill House<\/a> &#8211; much much more than just a house<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottsabbotsford.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abbotsford House<\/a> &#8211; home of Sir Walter Scott, good restaurant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitscotland.com\/info\/see-do\/melrose-abbey-p247611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Melrose Abbey<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; and a lovely little town<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historicenvironment.scot\/visit-a-place\/places\/dryburgh-abbey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dryburgh Abbey<\/a> &#8211; Part of it operates as a hotel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historicenvironment.scot\/visit-a-place\/places\/jedburgh-abbey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jedburgh Abbey<\/a> &#8211; a Scottish Tourist Board 5* attraction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historicenvironment.scot\/visit-a-place\/places\/kelso-abbey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kelso Abbey<\/a> &#8211; and attractive market town<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floorscastle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Floors Castle<\/a> &#8211; biggest in Scotland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All these attractions are heading east from St Mary&#8217;s Loch. If you are in the area for a while it&#8217;s worth making a trip in that direction to appreciate the huge changes of landscape in the Borders. Going all the way to the east coast is quite a long drive but the roads are extremely quiet&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">(enjoyable, relaxed motorbike run)&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">and the scenic east coast (e.g. St Abbs) is beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dawyck Botanic Arboretum:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbge.org.uk\/visit\/dawyck-botanic-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dawyck botanic gardens<\/a> is the tree specialist arm of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbge.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh<\/a> (Dawyck is pronounced Doik &#8230; like a young ruffian with a letter D in front). If you like trees even a little you will love this place. These are not just trees, they are TREES! Nice cafe too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Samye Ling Buddhist Monastery:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Save yourself the plane fare to Tibet&nbsp;and come to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samyeling.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Samye Ling Monastery<\/a> in the Scottish Borders! The drive itself is a delightful and perhaps spiritual journey! The monastery has been here for more than 50 years. This is not some kind of recreation (unintended Buddhist pun) in the Disney style. It&#8217;s the real thing. However you do not need to be a Buddhist to visit and sample the spirituality, the beautiful setting, the extraordinary buildings, the tea, the rugs.
